"What I was trying to say in the book, and what I’m still trying to say, is that it’s impossible to try and make a separation between what I was calling the “ensemble of the sense” and the “ensemble of the social”—and that notion of the ensemble of the social is directly out of early Marx, Theses on Feuerbach. I want to say that there’s a sociality of the senses—which is a formulation Marx makes, When the senses become theoreticians in their practice—I was trying to talk about that, as something that is actually occurring in our encounters with art, and in particular with Black art."
